Dorset Towns and Villages - Coastal

BRIDPORT & WEST BAY: West Bay Harbour has recently seen some development, with its new "marina", giving it a slightly modern look set off against the old harbour and surrounding buildings. However, further development in the form of flats may soon alter the look of this charming harbour - you may have to stand with your back to the west and look eastwards over the harbour!

CHARMOUTH: A small seaside village between Lyme Regis and Bridport. The village is close to a wonderful beach which has sand and rock-pools to the west of the river and sand turning to shingle on the east side. There is wonderful cliff scenery here, and it is very famous for its fossils that can be found by looking carefully as you walk along the beach

LYME REGIS: A simply delightful coastal town right on the border of Dorset and Devon. Its steep hills in allow wonderful views from all access roads, but once on the seafront you can enjoy a flat stroll from one end to the other (missing out the high street which is steep!). There are many charming shops to delight the tourist and some great places to enjoy food and drink. Famous for its fossils (and of the young lady that discovered the, miss Mary Anning b.1799). The French Lieutenant's Woman was filmed her in the 80s.

SWANAGE: A true traditional seaside resort - fish and chip shops, ice cream parlours and penny arcades (ok - probably more like 50p arcades these days!) and a nice sandy beach. It is a superb holiday destination for those with kids and there is access by the local steam train to the wonderfully picturesque village of Corfe Castle.

More coming soon - this was just to get the page started!
