Council installs new gatehouse for Westwey Road pontoon moorings

Thursday, 25 May 2006

As part of ongoing improvements to the Council-owned pontoons at Weymouth’s Inner Harbour, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council is installing a new gatehouse at Westwey Road.

The gatehouse is accessed by an electronic key fob controlled gate, similar to the existing one at North Quay, with a new walkway ramp and large landing platform with space for rollerbins for recycling and bicycle parking.  The existing access gate will remain in position until new key fobs for the new gate have been issued to all existing berth holders.

The gatehouse has been designed in order to accommodate toilets which will be installed when more funds become available.

Other recent improvements include electrical supplies to these pontoons and new state of the art fibreglass decking which has been purchased but yet to be installed, hopefully this season.

Cllr Lynne Herbert, Theme Brief Holder for Tourism and the Economy, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council said: “The installation of the new gatehouse is an essential part of the overall upgrade of the harbour facilities and will significantly improve access and security. I would also like to apologise to any road users who might have been delayed by these works in the last week or so.  We have tried to keep delays to the absolute minimum.  This work is of considerable importance in terms of ensuring that the harbour, one of the resort’s key assets, offers up to date facilities to its customers.”

The Gatehouse has been manufactured by Solent Marine of Southampton and the civil works, including pile driving, has been carried out by the local firm of Sawtell Construction.
