Weymouth History Timeline: Weymouth history goes back to Roman times and there are visible Roman remains of a small temple on the hill above Bowleaze Cove. Roman pavements and coins have also been discovered in the area. 1100: First mention of the Port is made when the two ports of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis on each side of the river were granted to the Convent and Prior of St Swithin of Winchester. 1348: A ship arrived in June at Melcome Regis, carrying the Black Death via sailor from Gascony. 1789 and 1805: The age of Tourism began with the visits of King George III (making Weymouth one of the first tourist destinations in the country) 1571: The joining of the two towns of Weymouth and Melcombe (each side of the river) to Form Weymouth 1794: Regular crossings between Weymouth and the Channel Islands were initiated 1837: The building of the Guildhall - St Edmund Street 1855: The building of the Old Fish Market - Custom House Quay 1872: A dam across the harbour was built to help keep the water levels up in the Inner Harbour. Before this, it was tidal as far as Radipole. This dam became redundant in 1921. 1908: The Pavilion Theatre opened 1910: The marriage of Bessie Munday and Henry Williams (aka George Smith)(Bigamy and Murder case) 1921: Tidal dam and Westham Bridge were constructed 1930: Town Bridge built 1954: The Ritz Theatre burnt down 1960: Opening of the current Pavilion Theatre on the old site of the Ritz 1983: Host for the first of three times for the start of the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race 1986: Weymouth Station demolished 1987: Host for the second of three times for the start of the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race 1994: Host for the third time for the start of the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race, the only port in the world to have don so. 2005: Weymouth Football Club turn professional 2005: Announcement of Weymouth as Olympic venue for Watersports 2012: Weymouth Olympics - watersports events
